# retzepter.com

The personal site of Emmanuel Retzepter, a creative developer. It is one
full-screen interactive artifact: a single page with no navigation, no
sub-pages, no links out. The page is the entire site.

## Who made it

Emmanuel Retzepter, a creative developer working across WebGL, Web Audio and
front-end engineering. He designed, built and scored this site himself: the
visuals, the interaction and the music are all his own work. The track it
plays, "Listen," is his 2024 composition.

## What is on the page

A mood-shifting jewel sphere with five orbiting text rings, a heartbeat you
can hear, and a HUD overlay that remembers you across visits. The mood
(palette, tempo, vocabulary) is picked from the visitor's local time of day,
season, and moon phase, all computed locally in the browser.

## How to interact

- Press and hold the sphere. The world falls away into a galaxy of other
  worlds (imagined siblings of this one, simulated locally, with other
  hands pressing on them), and a secret mood
  opens. From there the artifact carries you hands-free through a scored
  voyage just under three minutes long (2:58), framed as a short film: a
  title card on the page-turn, credits after the last note. Holding Space
  or Enter works the same as holding the pointer.
- A machine voice speaks a short conditional script as you go, built to react
  to whether you let go or keep holding. Late in the voyage every other world
  falls quiet, and then one answers: the sky relights and the song returns.
- A completed crossing leaves one small world in the idle sky, the one that
  answered, on every visit after.
- Tap in a rhythm (four taps, roughly 300 to 1800ms apart) and the artifact
  adopts that tempo as its own heartbeat from then on.
- Two quick taps anywhere mute or unmute the sound. Nothing else changes:
  the film keeps playing, the heartbeat keeps beating, just silently.
- Letting go of a real hold before the secret opens is remembered: about a
  third of the near worlds stay dark on the next hold, until a crossing is
  completed.

## The score

The voyage is scored by "Listen," Emmanuel Retzepter's own 2024 track,
synthesised live in the browser with WebAudio (no audio samples anywhere).
It transposes to the mood's key and its plan drives the visuals: worlds
light up one by one as the arpeggio plays them in, relight two at a time
when the answer comes, and go dark again the same way as the piece ends.

## Privacy

Everything is computed locally: the time of day, the moon phase, the
visitor's mood, the taught tempo, whether the secret has been found, the
other hands and the heartbeat that answers (both simulated locally). Nothing
is transmitted anywhere. State that persists (visit count, last mood, a
taught pulse, the secret, the keepsake world) lives only in the browser's localStorage, tied to
that browser, never sent to a server.

The site sets no cookies. Page views are counted in aggregate by Cloudflare's
cookieless analytics, which stores nothing on the visitor's device, records no
identifier, and does not follow anyone between sites. Nothing else is
collected.
